THE CHANGE WE DESIRE, ROAD SAFETY PERSPECTIVE.

THE RENEWED HOPE

Nigeria and Nigerians ushered in a new government, this government has had the word "CHANGE" as its campaign slogan during the electioneering period. This change mantra reverberated in the minds and hearts of Nigerians whose hope have been dashed as a result of bad governance, mismanaged economy, deeply rooted corruption in all levels of government and unemployment at its highest. It's now a renewed hope for all Nigerians in this new administration that government and governance will be for the people democratically and constitutionally.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE
Back to the issue and concern of this blog.
"Everything rises and falls on leadership" once the leaders get it right the followers emulate. The new president of Nigeria, president Buhari has warned his aides and motorcade, even before swearing in as president, to obey traffic laws. This good gesture of number one citizen of Nigeria is a way of telling all Nigerians, road users in particular that the era of road lawlessness has come to an end.

We have a good example in immediate past Governor of Lagos state Mr. Babatunde Fashola
[SAN] who had never violated any traffic law [s] or use his position as governor to bully other road users as it has been one of the characteristics of government officials be elected/appointed in Nigeria. He his known to use his motorcade to arrest any traffic law violator [s] chief among which was an arrest of two military officers [A colonel and staff sergeant]. See pix below.

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE ON THE ROAD
We all applaud the president when the news broke that he had ordered his aides and motorcade to always obey traffic laws. To us all, it's a right step in the right direction, but, it takes more than a statement from the president to put sanity on our roads.
"The president can be a good example to us, but can't make us a good example to ourselves". He can't be everywhere to make us do the right thing if we don't have the willingness and discipline to do it. This willingness and discipline to do the right thing is the starting point of the change we desire to see on our roads.

What our roads are today, is the reflection of actions and decisions the government and road users have made in the past. If we want safe roads to drive on, let's the change begins with the way we drive, let it begins from being safety conscious on the road, let it begins from the willingness to obey traffic laws rather than being forced to do it. Don't just sing the change mantra, let's the change begins with you. Be the change you want to see on the road.
